(heavy spoilers head from the anime and the manga) How Death Note anime does justice to the manga Detective theme VS Dark theme Those who have read the manga and had come to watch the anime will probably see something strange about L’s dialogues, but won’t know where to point up to say the cause of this, but if those readers will compare the versions more closely they will see that entire dialogues of L had been cut out, or rather shortened. Those though who haven’t read the manga will ask naively what is missing about L’s dialogues, they are getting straight to the point and make perfectly sense. What anime watchers doesn’t know is the more detective mind of L in the manga. You see, Ohba made L not just smart but made sure there isn’t any plot hole left by L’s methods and actions, so L’s deductions in the manga are much more expanded and covering up a lot of holes that might pop to the reader mind, those long and expanded deduction dialogues making L much more detective like, while in the anime he sure explain great things and all but the Detective theme from the manga were lost a little bit. Actually, the director of the anime solves this mystery, in an interview he says that it was really challenging to adapt one to one the long dialogues of the manga, and not just L’s, so he had to rewrite and cut a lot to fits the anime format, the manga readers might wants the director of the anime to return from that action, but it’s actually makes perfect sense - in anime and especially in the late night time slot of Death Note, it’s hard to make in anime full dialogues and massive talking for 20 minutes, in the manga it make perfect sense to be read, but hearing a lot of talking in TV might make the watchers boring and sleepy, to make good pace in anime you need to cut a couple of things. So L’s long deductions are maybe out, but the director didn’t want to be owe to the manga readers, the Detective theme is perfectly converted into more Dark and Psychological theme. While in the manga the detective theme takes much of the content, the anime filling the holes missing by that theme to add much more dark and psychological tone, while in the manga the highlight in L’s scene are on his deduction, in the anime the dark and the psychological tone makes more place than in the manga, and with story as Death Note even manga readers will be happy with because those tones were missing in the manga, even more to an anime watcher who will read the manga after watching the anime he will see that the dark tone of the anime adds a lot to the characters feeling, especially Light. One example for that is when Light writes L. Tailor, in the manga we only sees Light after writing his name, In the anime on the other hand, hey added us Light’s madness way of his writing, showing that adding psychological theme can change your viewing on the character. Another thing that the psychological theme adding, is the cat & mouse tone of the manga, In the manga L and Light cat & mouse chase is very blinded with the detective theme, but allowing the dialogues much more free and straight making a lot of room for the chase by those tones. There would be those that would say they prefer the detective theme of the manga on the dark theme of the anime, so while there would be those who prefer the manga way than the anime way, it’s up to the fans opinions, but it doesn’t up to discussion to say that while the anime cut some long dialogues, it’s the producers and the director did smartly to still making things understandable like in the manga while adding more liveliness to the black and white manga, together with one of the best OST there is which lies on the much more darker and psychological tone of the anime. Light cleverness Those who read the L and Light scene in the coffee shop in the manga, will see that one of the tests of L to Light had been missing, what happened to the list of the FBI agents? In fact it was one of the most hard evidence of L to investigate in Yagami’s house! The answer is that the script writers of the anime made Light much more clever and it is in fact saving Light in some way than his manga’s mistakes. In the manga, when Light tricks Ray Penbar to write his fellow FBI agents, he tells him to call up his supervisor in the FBI, to send to one of the agents E-mail with the list of the FBI agents so he will sent it back to him. In the anime on the other hand, he tells him to write his supervisor name in the envelope open space, and right after writing in the Death Note paper his supervisor will sends him and the other FBI agents the FBI agents list in the E-mail. If you followed the pattern right you will see where Light had made a mistake in the manga - later when L checking up the order of the agents receiving the file, he make a note of the fact that the supervisor had sent to one of the FBI agents the file so he will send it to Rey Penber by Rey Penber request, which makes him immediately suspicious to be the victim of Kira. In the anime on the other hand the order receive of the file is totally random as the Death Note made that way, so there’s no suspicious to Rey Penbar. Due the fix in the anime, what makes L to deduce that Rey Penbar to be suspicious isn’t the receive orders, but weird points on his death is what makes his investigate the Kitamuras and the Yagami. While in the manga it’s the fact that Rey Penbar requested that E-mail that makes him suspicious together with the small points of death, which makes his investigation on the Yagami and Kitamura families much more justified. So in other words, this small fix actually makes the Light in the anime much more clever, since in the manga he actually left little too much big hole to lead to him. Yotsuba arc Everyone will probably agree that the Yotsuba arc were probably one of the slow and low arcs in the L’s part of the story, but few people who checked through the manga by the anime will see that the anime ver putted the manga part little better. First thing, the Yotsuba arc members have large meeting that wether were short in the anime or rather cut the whole discussion and gave us only the important stuff. One of the things with the manga version of the Yotsuba group is that their discussions in the manga are long, long enough to fill up entire chapter, and their discussion aren’t like any business men but detective like, they are genius after all. Though their meetings can be little burden in the manga, their deductions are actually fits the manga detective theme. But when the transmit to the anime goes - as I mentioned in “Detective theme VS Dark theme” section - their meetings are cutting up to the point, though we still see their smartness they are not talking like detectives but as business men needs to which makes the arc much better and more straight to the point. Secondly, the Yotsuba arc in the manga ’til the Higuchi chase point is pretty long, it’s starting in volume 5 - ch.38 to volume 6 - chp.49, in terms of Death Note it’s meaning a lot, comparing to the other arcs. For the comparison - ‘till the end of episode 17 the anime covered quite a lot - volume 1 to the start of 5, but the Yotsuba arc is only 18-21 before that the chase after Higuchi starts. Those who see those points will see that a lot of manga material in the Yotsuba arc just cut out, for example the meeting in ep19 of Soichiru and the NPA supervisor were about couple of minutes while in the manga it’s catching up almost entire chapter. In short - while the Yotsuba arc in the manga is 2 volumed the anime adapted it to be 4 episodes, while the first 17 episodes were 4 volumes, mostly from the obvious reason - to make the Yotsuba arc more straight to the point as it’s only serve a ladder to Light’s great climax, and MadHouse did that great. L’s Death There’s no need much to say here, just too comprise. In other words - what the anime can deliver that the manga can’t. Mafia arc Those who haven’t read the manga gonna ask - Mafia arc? When did that happened? Those 3 episodes?? (27-29) what are you talking about? So yeah, this arc is real, those who read the manga can confirms it - from the middle plus of volume 7 ‘till half of volume 9 there’s arc arc called the mafia arc, and as you see it’s quite long. What is it about? Most of it as it sound about Light Vs Mello mafia gang. As in the anime Mello kidnapping the Death Note and Light is in big pinch, and so the manga goes into quite an adventure that doesn’t fit the overall them of the manga - where all the L part summarise by Light’s outsmarted plans, the Mafia arc is quite a Politic Police theme arc, and yeah there’s some good action here and there, but it taking quite much time for the story of the arc to be conclude in Light’s dramatic smart plan that goes with the action theme as well. MadHouse did great job in this arc to convert this long arc (almost 3 volumes only on that) to 3 episodes. In short words their script writers just went and rewritten the all arc to short 3 episodes story, they took apart the pointless stories and shortened it to get to the straight point. There’s maybe in the manga some good parts as you can see how Light now rules the world government, but there’s some of those in N arc in the anime too, so no one miss nothing and a lot that can be saved from the anime were saved. Near Cruelty No one of you will deny it, Near methods are the worse. Where L takes to investigate slowly and finds evidences, Near shooting in the air, not for nothing Ohba written his methods as building puzzles. One of the harsh things he’s making in the anime is saying out loud that L (Light) is Kira! Everyone who’s watching the anime will be astonishing from Near boldness and cruelty saying it like this in front of all the Japanese investigation members and Light himself. Well, in the manga he’s more than in the anime. In the manga, Near doesn’t just come out and say - L you are Kira as in the anime, since he believing that L (Light) is Kira he doesn’t just giving hints to the force members but making lies in sneaky way to make the task force believing him, the example for that is his lie that Mogi had heart attack by Kira (in the manga Mogi is going in early stage to Near whereabouts) only to make more inside argument in the task force. Seems that MadHouse didn’t like Near cruelty, the one who supposed to be the successor of L to use sneaky ways like this, so MadHouse just rewrite it and made N says that L is Kira, maybe boldness but not sneaky. N arc Some will say I’m repeating myself as in the Yotsuba arc and the Mafia arc, so yeah MadHouse did it again and shortened the N arc, hooray! But still, there’s a lot of compliment only about the N arc in the anime so I had to come and say this - what the anime did to the N arc is taking really long and even boring at parts and did it better. Don’t worry, I will explain. It doesn’t need to be a genius to understand that the N arc is creation of Ohba only to make build up to the last arc, Near isn’t good as L at all and everyone will say that, he’s merely creation by Ohba only to make things going to the grand climax which no one will deny that is one of the best ending in the anime history. But as build-up known, it might be boring because the whole things is only to reach to the end point, exactly as a ride the ending might be fun but the road can be long. In most manga the mangaka thinks of great way to build up things, but in case of Death Note style it’s different - there’s a lot and lots of chapters that the characters doing nothing but making the way to build a climax at the end, but nothing else, so the story of those chapters can be shallow most of the time. MadHouse once again took bunch of volumes - from 9 to 11, 3 packed volumes about the N arc alone meaning the Yellow Box part is not included) and made them 6 episodes (30-35). It’s pointless to say that though N arc considered the worse by everyone MadHouse managed to get the best out of it, so the whole anime fandom - the manga version of the manga is much worse, you saved by not reading so much chapters. Light Death There are a lot of people to say - “Light’s death in the manga is better” or the opposite, or rather “both deaths are good”. I will try not to make opinion based fact but putting the cards open before it, here is how Light begged not to die in the manga and his humiliated death: On the contrary, though it’s fitting to Light to beg not to be killed due his “not want to lose” characteristic, the anime gave him much more “soft” and not humiliated death. Now let’s face facts, those who thoughts Light is deserve his humiliated death, why they thinks that? Do they hate Light? It’s right that Light wasn’t that good guy, but it’s common sense to like at least the development in our Light. Sure, he deserve his death, and the way he dies is short of closing the circle that seems Madhouse tried to show us by ending the anime here and not adapting ch.108, so Light’s death in the anime may seems by MadHouse to seals off Light though to be total maniac but still let our beloved character dying horrible way but much less humiliated. Summary There’s no doubt that there’s no anime without some downhills, as there aren’t any story in the world without any. Sure there were some downhills in the animation here and there, but in general MadHouse did great job adapting Death Note, not only to show the advantage of animated comics but other fixing that making this great story to look good on the screen to make justice to the manga.
